On January 19 2004 the Peace River Regional District met CN Rail executives to discuss BC Rail asset sale timing and projected freight growth. CN plans more rail traffic through Chetwynd, about one additional train per day for 3–5 years then more later, with forest products and grain as main growth drivers and lower truck traffic. Express freights to Chicago, a northeast container terminal race, and access to regional funds were outlined while Alaska rail linkage remained tentative.
