Chlorination Order in Erickson Watershed Sparks Conflict Claim
The Society Promoting Environmental Conservation accuses the provincial government of a conflict of interest by ordering chlorination of Erickson water while funding research into logging in the watershed. SPEC plans a campaign to defend community watersheds as Will Koop links timber access to water quality deterioration and expanded chlorination needs. Dr Aziz Mazumder heads Canada’s only drinking water research department at UVic working on guidelines for logging near drinking sources. Residents oppose logging to preserve forest cover and avoid chlorination. The October 1999 study funding totaled 2.5 million from Galloway Lumber, Crestbrook Forest, the ministry of environment, and Forest Renewal BC. Contact details for SPEC and BC Tap Water Alliance are provided.
