Local poet Laurie Martin celebrates health summit success

Local poet Laurie Martin known for Storyteller in Ballads of Our Times celebrated a successful rural health summit in Prince George. The three day conference drew 400 participants, addressed rural health care action plans, doctor and nurse recruitment, and the South Peace Health Council’s future role.

Health action plan committee monitors progress and funding

A Dec 22 committee forms to monitor the health action plan with a Jan 15 ministry report for review. Three new nursing grant programs will be evaluated by Feb 7. Canada funds include 9.3 million for home care, 66 million for equipment, 2 million for community services to cut mental health hospitalizations, 160,000 to UNBC for Rural and Remote Healthy Institute. Pneumococcal vaccination expands and 2.9 million funds create 92 new licensed practical nurse positions in acute care.
