The minister announced a two track approach to the new compulsory consumer education course. Students may take the junior level in grades 9 or 10 or the senior level in grades 11 or 12. The program aims to cover budgeting, interest rates, and consumer rights while easing impacts on timetables and electives.
GA (atom) B.C. Rail awarded two tunnel contracts for the 129 Tumbler Ridge Branch Line to the northeast coal fields. Scarmar Constructions Ltd. gets 39.83 million to finish 4.3 km of the Table Tunnel western section. Guy F Atkinson Construction Ltd. and Commonwealth Construction Ltd. win the remaining 4.8 km for 54.66 million.
The Chetwynd Lions won first place at the Fort St. John Atom Jam on January 9 and 10. Coaches Rick Dundas and Bill Rand praised the boys as they earned multiple MVP awards and hat tricks, with Shane Pederson and Ricky Paul leading scorers in a series of wins including a playoff victory over Dawson Creek Safeway.

A Wolverine Tunnel contract has been awarded to a consortium for the western section and a separate contract for the remaining 3.4 km. Total project cost is expected around 156.8 million with work starting in March 1982 and tunnel completion ready for track laying by August 31, 1983.

The B C Utilities Commission has not decided if Energy Minister Bob McClelland will be called to testify at the Site C dam hearings on the Peace River. A five member panel will meet soon to discuss. Keith Henry, chairman, said Tuesday after the Peace Valley Environmental Association urged three weeks ago that McClelland be subpoenaed to answer policy questions.
