Air Transport Committee maps new air links in north central BC

The Air Transport Committee released a report on North Central British Columbia air services based on field studies from March and April 1983. It backs a Tumbler Ridge to Prince George link and a Prince Rupert to Prince George link with twice daily service, notes potential ties with Fort St. John Hudsons Hope and Chetwynd, and finds no immediate need for more Fort St. John charter operators due to oil and gas downturn. Northeast coal shipment marks first from B C port

Prince Rupert B C The first shipment of coal from northeast British Columbia was loaded onto the Japanese ship Shoryu Maru at Ridley Island in a ceremony attended by BC Industry Minister Don Phillips Agriculture Minister Eugene Whelan and federal official Ron Basford. The vessel carries 85 000 tonnes from northeast mines. The ceremony included gifts for the ship's captain as the port begins operations.

Chetwynd Council Receives Various Correspondence

The January 3 meeting of Chetwynd and District Council reviewed correspondence from Taylor on the Recreation Study Plan and northern limit adjustment, Peace River Liard RD on grants and provisional budget, Stanley Associates for water works final payment, 0440 Cable on underground servicing, Seventh Day Adventist Church on tax exemption parcel amalgamation, Tumbler Ridge on Arena Complex and Library recommendations, and Ministry of Municipal Affairs Scholarship circular. Council accepted items for information or action as noted.

Fire at Gerry Boudreault Body Shop Contained to Shed

Chetwynd volunteers responded to a January 4 fire at Gerry Boudreault Body Shop. A wind blown TV antenna fell onto a propane tank, igniting a small storage shed behind the shop. Fire crews confined the blaze to the shed with no major damage to the shop. Streets are being graded and sanded. Alderman updates noted a new fire truck arriving soon and various subdivision funding debates.

Hasler Flats to Get 3 Channel TV Rebroadcast System

The Chetwynd Communications Society ordered a three channel rebroadcast system for Hasler Flats. B C T V Vancouver ITV Edmonton and the Knowledge Network will be picked up off air from Waled Hill and rebroadcast on channels 4 9 and 10. Equipment to arrive by January end with installation to begin then and go on air early February pending CRTC licenses. The society plans building a site with power poles and antennas and then targets Moberly Lake area after Hasler is on.

Testing TV rebroadcast signals around the lake

Society members have tested at several lake locations but have not yet found a suitable site with strong enough signals for rebroadcasting. Additional tests will occur soon and it is hoped a rebroadcast system can be installed in the spring.

Channel 2 Transmitter Out of Service for Repairs

Channel 2 rebroadcasting CITV from Edmonton is broken and sent to Vancouver for repair after a New Year snow blockage delayed access to Wabi Hill. Repairs to be completed by air, with Channel 3 on standby for temporary replacement later this year. Channel 2 outage expected for a couple of weeks.

Canfor seeks tree farm licence in northeastern BC

A provincial hearing opens on Canfor Ltd. plan to swap a forest licence for a tree farm licence covering 8,190 square kilometres near Chetwynd Tumbler Ridge Fort St John and Hudson Hope. The company commits over 1 million dollars a year to silviculture and to rehabilitate 400 square kilometres, plus recreation facilities. Opposition from Tumbler Ridge over river valley lands is noted.
