Avalanche claims two lives near Honeymoon Creek
A weekend snowmobile accident near Honeymoon Creek behind Powder King Ski Hill in Alberta left Melvin Nickel aged 40 of Bay Tree and James Kulachkosky aged 38 of Bonanza dead after being buried six to eight feet in compact snow. RCMP and Search and Rescue recovered the victims and coroner officials will investigate.

Residents vote no on rezoning for rehab centre in Chetwynd
At a December public meeting Chetwynd officials heard developer Pim Wright’s plan to rezone land now used by iMacLeods True Value to allow a private 30 bed substance abuse rehabilitation facility. Wright said clients travel from outside town, stay 30 to 40 days, pay up to 6000 per visit, and will be escorted with security and staff walking to work. Over 25 residents attended.

Woman health needs project coordinator chosen in South Peace
Moberly Lake resident Marcie Fofonoff has been selected by the Women's Health Advisory Committee as project coordinator for a funded research effort. Reporting to the South Peace Health Council, she will gather information on women's health and develop strategies to improve health in communities within the council's catchment, traveling across Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge, Pouce Coupe, Groundbirch, Moberly Lake and rural areas.

Amnesty extends for firearm transfers and prohibitions
Federal Justice Minister Anne McLellan announced extensions of the 25 dollar firearms transfer fee waiver and the amnesty for prohibited firearms and unregistered restricted firearms to June 30 2001. She said the extensions address owner concerns while safeguarding public safety. The waiver does not apply to transfers before June.
