Westward moving elk to establish new Williston herd

Over the next weeks 50 to 60 elk from east of Chelywnd will be captured and moved west across mountains to the Ingenika River area at the north end of Williston Reservoir. Biologist Mari Wood says the herd will be examined inoculated and fitted with collars before 12 hours of transport to Mackenzie then by logging road to the Williston Lake west side. The transplanted elk, mainly pregnant females, will intermix with a resident 30 to 40 elk and may boost reproduction. The plan aims for five females per male, depending on captured sex ratio, with no hunting agreed for five years by Tsay Keh Dene on their lands.
