Library asks village for more money

At the February 19 1980 meeting the Library Delegation proposed an 18392 dollar budget with a 13500 dollar village request up 3000 from last year to cover cost of living and wage increases for librarian assistant and janitor. They report 1129 new registrations and 116 non residents paying six dollars. The library holds 4500 books 1200 paperbacks and over 4000 non fiction with 14818 rentals last year.

Heart Fund Pancake Breakfast Raises 1056 Dollars

Chetwynd Heart Foundation and Dixie Lee Chicken hosted the 2nd annual fund raiser at the Chetwynd Motor Hotel. 635 pancakes were prepared in six hours by John Wong and kitchen staff, with volunteers from hotel waitresses and Guides aiding. Donations totaled 1056 dollars, with a raffle for the Easter Afghan and door to door canvassing planned for donations from non attenders.

Labor leader urges cross party labor business cooperation in Dawson Creek

Dave MacIntyre BC Federation of Labour secretary treasurer speaks to directors of the BC Provincial Chamber of Commerce in Dawson Creek. He notes 45 percent of BC workers are union represented and calls for common ground between business and labour to address decade ahead changes and encourage cooperation. Minister of Tourism Visits Region G Meeting Weekend

The Honourable Pat Jordan, Minister of Tourism, visited Prince George last weekend to attend the Region G Yellowhead Tourist Association Annual Meeting. Region H members including Bunne Hoffman and Keith Lovelock joined in a special session to discuss the 3M tourism study, ferry service to Prince Rupert, campground plans, recreation facilities at Dam Site I and Monkman Pass, and Guides and Outfitters Package Tours before flying with the minister to Ft. St. John.

Logging truck crash saves driver after 150 foot fall

At 10:00 am on Bluff Creek Road in the Sukunka Valley, a logging truck operated by A and J Trucking driven by Roger Rohel went over a 150 foot bank. Beattie and Jobson called in CFI first aid and a helicopter, used a hack saw and hydraulic jacks to free the pinned driver, who was taken to Chetwynd Hospital with serious bruising.

Single Parents Plan Free Luncheon and Association Meeting

On Tuesday March 4, 1980 from 12 to 1 pm a free luncheon for single parents will be held at the Elks Hall in Dawson Creek. Representatives of the Single Parents Association will speak on challenges faced by single parent families and the plan to form a Chetwynd area self help group with support and socialization. Contact Karen Wright at the Ministry of Human Resources 788-9241 to attend. free babysitting will be provided.

Gordon Shrum station adds 300000 kilowatts of power

The Gordon Shrum generating station on the Peace River added 300000 kW with the tenth unit activated on Feb 12 1980. The plant now outputs 2416000 kW, completing a billion dollar project begun in 1961. Nissho Iwai installed the turbine and generator, Fuji Electric built the equipment, with Flanders Installations Ltd as sub contractor. The underground powerhouse measures 1000 feet long 80 feet wide and 120 feet high and first produced power in 1968 after the initial three generators.
