The local RCMP urge merchants in Chetwynd and surrounding areas to beware of bad checks. Over the past month several businesses have been hit, with offenders both local and from outside. The RCMP has outlined cheque cashing procedures in the Checkmate column.
In 1941 pamphlets on Credit Unions at a Farmers Institute convention sparked local interest among farmers in the Lakeview district. Across gatherings and meetings, discussions continued for two years about forming a cooperative financial institution as Canada recovered from a deep Depression, with banks and lenders tightening credit for small villages.
Mayor Maurice Hayward travels to Victoria with village clerk administrator J A Teslyk and regional district leaders to press for sessions with provincial officials on municipal and regional developments. Fort Nelson and Hudson's Hope mayors join in hopes of fruitful talks.
In Dawson Creek Liberals elect Sonia Fynn teacher at Bert Bowes in Ft. St. John as President of the Prince George Peace River Liberal Federal Riding Association. Allan Bate of Prince George and Jim McIntyre of Dawson Creek are named North and South Vice-Presidents with Roger Pryke as Secretary-Treasurer. The meeting also noted a prayer and a visit by John Stewart and family to Chetwynd from Desmarais, Alberta.
Mayor Hayward and Andy Tesylk attend meetings in Victoria while Friday is a holiday for school children amid a teachers conference. Centennial Library hosts a successful Valentine Tea for its seventh anniversary drawing many patrons. Local families and friends visit from Prince George and Dawson Creek for weekend gatherings and events.
BC Hydro held the second of four meetings in Chetwynd on February 12 to discuss Site One dam on the Peace River. About 50 attendees viewed a film and heard details on location near Hudson Hope, environmental limits, and reservoir size. Preliminary work slated for 1974 with 50–60 initial jobs rising to 1200 in 1977, then tapering through 1980.
Dr Bill Wieland will establish a veterinary clinic in Chetwynd starting February 19 after efforts by the South Peace Cattlemen's Association. He has worked in Prince George and will be at the Negu farm accepting calls from Tuesday. Phone number 788 2612.
Women of the Chetwynd area organize an exhibition hockey game on Saturday evening March 23. Proceeds go to the Chetwynd Minor Hockey Association. Two mother teams will play under international rules with no checking and regulation time. Coaches Lawrence Clary and Larry Pearson will recruit players. Call 788-2788 to join, all who wish to play invited.
Scouts in Chetwynd and their families launch fundraisers to send boys to the B C Jamboree 1974 at Sooke Vancouver Island. Bottle drives pancake breakfasts flower and chocolate sales are planned as part of the effort to support outdoor activities and citizenship training begun by Lord Baden-Powell in 1908.
