Policing in Chetwynd urged to narrow non police duties
Sgt. Ray Cunningham of the Chetwynd RCMP told council on February 3 that community demands risk overloading police with social tasks. He cited 1980 crime trends with a 12-13 percent rate and an 11.2 percent overall rise, praising Patty Dunn for juvenile crime gains and warning that a municipal contract and about $1 million yearly costs, plus office and equipment needs, would follow population growth to 5,000. He urged shifts to community and other agency responsibility and a more investigative police role.
