Brenda Little chairs the annual meeting for Chetwynd Public Library praising the library as among British Columbia’s best and noting 1982 as a year of change. She thanks staff board and volunteers for work during expansion, inventory, moving furniture and plumbing tasks, and the community for their help.
Ardith and Lisa Haaparanta of Prince George swept trophies at the Northern B C Quarter Horse Association awards night in Quesnel. Lisa won nine trophies and Ardith seven as the circuit awards reflect a 13 show season across Prince George Quesnel Williams Lake. Ardith’s Vic Wahluke captured Amateur High Point and Senior Horse High Point, with his class placings and a Trail first. Lisa, aboard Willies Daughter, earned Youth High Point and circuit standings plus a performance class. The pair traveled to 36 BC shows, competing in 680 classes, with Lisa earning the Youth Register of Merit.
The new Chetwynd Post Office was officially opened by Constable Ted Lindsay. Local Postmaster Steve Bernath and BC Yukon officials welcomed guests including Mayor Lasser. The facility adds 324 more box services, a larger lobby, and expanded sorting areas, with remarks from Rick McEachen and others. Ardith McQueen and Lisa McQueen earned regional recognitions in youth showing, and community officials praised continued library growth and district services.
South Peace M L A Don Phillips says February recall to double shifts at Cantor mill will likely continue, despite U.S. lumber duties threat and chip storage issues. He cites minister Waterland in Washington negotiating to block duties and asserts Cantor’s management will keep operations full amid weak pulp demand. The region touts low unemployment as Canfor’s Chetwynd plant ships logs, lumber and chips, employing 350 with $12 million in salaries and benefits.
Lions publicity chair reports a distinguished guest visit on February 10 by Lion Judge Brian Stevenson of Calgary and Calgary North East Lions. District Governor Gerry Repecka and wife joined. Stevenson seeks International Third Vice President and has long service history including roles from Leo Chairman to District Governor and International Director for 1977 80.
The Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce plans a Midnight Madness sale during Winter Carnival Days March 17 to 20. Details, including exact date and time, will be finalized at the February 15 meeting at 7 30 p m in Meeting Room 3 Rec Centre. Local merchants and events include Fashion Show, PE Carnival, Curling Spiel, Snow Queen's Ball, steak night and more.
