The Local Initiative Program reports mild weather aided stage one progress. Project 3B, cleaning trees to reduce fire risk at the north east garbage site, cost 1900 with 1100 government share. Work now on project 1 clearing snowmobile trails green belt and park areas with burning underbrush. Village cost 800 on project 3B and 9490 on project 1.
M L A Don Phillips told Sa Gee Twn Day Care Centre officials a grant is coming for equipment costing 2500 in the community hall at the Arena. Confirmation from Victoria is expected this week. Operating funds grant not yet decided. The society seeks qualified supervisors and plans an Adult Education night course for supervisors. Opening date to be set at this week’s society meeting.
Speed limits have been adjusted on highways 97 and 29 near Chetwynd and Hudson Hope. The 30 mph zone is extended half a mile past the Forestry station and east to Gerwhen subdivision, with northward extension past weigh scales to one mile. The 45 mph zone on west No. 97 is lengthened by half a mile. A new 45 mph zone on north No. 29 extends about one mile north past weigh scales. Drivers urged to observe signs and drive carefully in winter conditions.
The Lions Club in Chetwynd teams with other clubs and societies to propose a diversified Winter Carnival during March 1 to 8. The program opens with a masquerade ball and features a series of events throughout the week.
Mothers of minor hockey boys host an event at Chetwynd Arena on February 15 at 8 p.m. Ray Fowler coaches the Red Hot Mamas and Lawrence Clary leads the 1974 Blue Angels. The 1974 game ended 5-5.
The Little Giants Figure Skating Club expresses disappointment after testing was cancelled for lack of an affiliation number despite all forms and funds being submitted. Sympathy goes to the Westgate families of Byron Westgate of Marshall Saskatchewan who died suddenly. Former Sharon and Lou Suverus plan a lengthy South American holiday, with updates expected next month. Scouts Cubs and Venturers report a successful bottle drive, funds benefiting all groups involved. For news tips call 788-2246.
Village Council honors the late Don Titus by dedicating Don Titus Memorial Park. A monument built with Peace River stones, inscribed to recognize Titus’s donations and community service, officially unveiled by the Mayor and Council on October 14, 1974. Titus, who moved from Edmonton in 1956, helped establish a thriving local business later known as the Chetwynd Motor Hotel.
Don Ewart, first vice president of the B C Amateur Hockey Association, stopped in Chetwynd after talks with Minor Hockey executives in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek. He outlined BC AHA policy to balance recreational and competitive hockey, noting growth from 36 500 members in 1970 to 65 000 in 1975 and describing district structure and annual outside tournaments restrictions.
Ewart notes eight years as trustee referee and emphasizes parent cooperation as vital for minor hockey. Clubs from Vancouver to Newfoundland seek answers to shared problems, with B C leading. He admits B C A H A does not know the solution but values trying.
The Hudsons Hope Society received an old log house built by the Peck family in the early 1930s. Donated by B C Hydro and funded by local initiatives, the structure is being moved behind the small log church near the museum for restoration and public viewing, aiming for summer 1975 opening.
