Tax policy shields religious property from higher tax rates
Finance Minister Mel Couvelier announced amendments to the Assessment Act to keep places of public worship from being reclassified for property tax. Several churches had shifted from Class 8 to Class 6 under a July Supreme Court interpretation, risking higher taxes in municipalities. The changes, effective for 1989, aim to preserve broad exemption while noting local service taxes in some areas. Westcoast safety record cited as exceptional by Willms amid plant operations and a regional basketball result noted with Hudson's Hope advancing and Spirit River contest details.
