Reindeer velvet hopes ride boom for farmers in B C
About 200 Northeastern British Columbia farmers back a plan to harvest velvet from reindeer to smooth volatile grain and livestock prices. A 7,000 reindeer shipment from Tuktoyaktuk to Fort St John is delayed by warm weather, delaying construction of an ice bridge over the Mackenzie River. If launched, reindeer would be vaccinated and fed new diets in the Peace River region. Velvet can fetch up to 105 a kilogram wholesale, with potential 200 million industry prospects by 2000.

A joint meeting of the Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce motel and hotel owners and other citizens concluded ample lodging exists. The main issue is tour companies booking then canceling last minute. Owners want reservations and deposits to secure rooms for groups.
