National Farmers Union holds 9th annual convention

The 9th Annual National Farmers Union gathering in Ottawa December 4 to 8 brought a near total leadership overhaul. Jim Mayne was named president, with Bill Dascovich and Ken Farman as vice pres and junior president. Delegates urged action against the railway and government over car supply, seed patent concerns, and Grain Stabilization program withdrawals. Regional results included Arthur Macklin and Ruth Weiner elected to national boards, with Macklin later named Region 8 coordinator.

Mayor Lasser Leads UBCM Session on Regional Districts

Mayor Lasser reported overwhelming support for a regional district roll in British Columbia at the UBCM convention held December 11. He chaired sessions for Peace River Liard Fraser Fort George and Cariboo districts, noting positive comments after objections in past years. A separate December 10 settlement planners meeting debated Chetwynd development.

BCSTA President opposes essential services act stance

BCSTA President David Kandal argues it is unnecessary to place school districts colleges universities and municipalities under the Essential Services Disputes Act after the West Kootenay Schools Collective Bargaining Assistance Act. He blames CUPE for refusing to bargain and says collective bargaining with binding arbitration is not real bargaining. Postal facilities will be closed in Chetwynd on Christmas Day December 26 27 and New Year's Day.

Language grants aid Salish preservation effort in British Columbia

The British Columbia Indian Language Project received a 15000 grant from the Ministry to save BC Indian languages and culture. Under Randy Bouchard, the project locates manuscripts in Canadian institutions, reproduces copies for Victoria and Ottawa archives, and produced six new works including Lillooet Stories and Shuswap Stories. Copies of Lillooet Stories were sent to BC schools. Chetwynd RCMP hold items offered for claim by the public.

Knifing incident at Peter Kiss Camp near Chetwynd

A 22 year old Herbert Bailey suffered a severe arm laceration after a knifing incident at the Peter Kiss Camp about 15 miles west of Chetwynd. Ronald Gordon of Edmonton was arrested and charged with wounding with intent. he appeared in Dawson Creek Provincial Court on December 15 and was remanded for trial. local rail safety lecture by Sergeant Fred Simpson reached three area schools on December 13 and 14 to warn against trespassing near tracks.

Grant to fund first aid training in British Columbia schools

The Canadian Red Cross Society receives a 25000 grant announced by Dr. Pat McGeer to expand first aid training in BC schools. Last year 1035 teachers in 55 districts were trained. this year the program will reach remote areas so every grade 6 student can be taught. Trained graduates show increased safety awareness and fewer accidents, with a test group recording one third fewer incidents than untrained peers.

The Service Stations in Chetwynd will be open on Christmas Day Boxing Day and New Year's Day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sukunka Automotive 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Westend Texaco 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chetwynd 66 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Chetwynd Motors 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
