Environment Minister John Reynolds announced a provincial environmental action plan to be released as a white paper by spring 1990. The plan will assess priorities for the 1990s, set strategies, and guide government industry and community collaboration toward sustainable development with broad public consultation.
Cabinet approved a comprehensive strategy for hazardous waste management in British Columbia. Environment Minister John Reynolds said the plan aims to reduce total waste via source controls recycling and reuse and to create an environmentally secure treatment facility for the 400000 tonnes already in storage. A dedicated hazardous waste team will implement the plan with a $6.5 million budget from lottery funds and all generators and users will share treatment costs.
