Provinces plan policing cost shift to small communities
British Columbia will require towns under 5,000 and unincorporated areas to begin sharing police costs. The plan, part of a five year mandate, targets 700,000 residents currently paying nothing for policing and may raise property taxes by about 975 per year in some towns.

De Jong sees hope of softwood deal
Forest Minister Mike de Jong said progress emerged in Washington talks toward a framework for a softwood settlement. The plan would end the Small Business Forest Enterprise Program, open timber to big companies, and tie stumpage to market value. He travels to provinces to build support and a December Montreal ministerial meeting will hash details. A permanent softwood joint commission idea is considered to steer disputes away from U.S. courts. A WTO challenge remains ongoing with an 18 month timeline for a decision.
