Railways push for higher grain shipment rates
Canadian National Railways outlined its case for higher grain rates during a two day Alberta to British Columbia media tour. Western VP Ross Walker cited grain handling as 17 percent of work but six percent of revenue, noting a 335 million loss on grain shipments with CP Rail. They warn of rail use rationing by 1984 and costly double tracking, urging a rate raise while preferring farmer funded subsidies over direct government subsidies. Ottawa faces a political choice to avoid subsidies.
