Major Diesel Spill Shuts Pine River Water Intake
A tanker truck carrying about 50 000 litres of diesel and gasoline dumped its load into the Pine River on Thursday at 4 00 p.m. The District of Chetwynd closed water intakes and urged residents to limit use to essentials. Emergency crews from the Highways Department, Chetwynd Fire Department, BC Ambulance, Ministry of the Environment, and RCMP responded. The Economy Carrier truck, driven by Carleton Lucas of Calgary, was damaged about 70 000 dollars. Lucas was airlifted to Edmonton for injuries. two California tourists helped rescue him. The truck overturned and spilled down a river embankment.
