Canfor reports second quarter profit in 1984 interim report
Canfor corporation reports a 0.2 million net income for Q2 1984 versus a 0.7 million Q2 1983 loss before tax reductions. For the first half, a 10.3 million net loss or 58 cents per share after preferred dividends, down from 15.1 million or 81 cents per share in 1983. President Peter Bentley cites BC pulp and paper lockout as the main dampener, with pulp demand improving and prices rebounding. Some lumber mill curtailment occurred due to US oversupply and weak prices, but 1984 should still improve on prior years. The firm completed a 25 million cumulative redeemable preferred share offering and notes further balance-sheet steps are under consideration.
