North East Plans Regional Police Service Proposal Endorsed

North East British Columbia communities and two regional districts submitted a June 2002 proposal to the Minister of Public Safety to implement a regional police service. The plan envisions one district governed from Fort St John with local detachments, funding via regional taxes, and community input, while the provincial model would keep governance unchanged and focus on funding changes only. The District of Chetwynd endorses the North East plan for provincial adoption with possible rate adjustments. Evan Saugstad, mayor, notes ongoing discussions and invites questions at 401-4102.
