BC Rail officials tour northern communities in August

A six member B C Rail management committee will visit Fort Nelson Fort St. John Dawson Creek and Chetwynd from August 11 to 13 meeting mayors and councils. President Mac Norris will speak to press and attend a luncheon at the Fort Nelson Chamber of Commerce during an inspection trip along the route.

Paving project set for John Hart to Peace River Highway

Work begins early August on 20.9 km paving stretch from Kathleen Creek to Silver Sands Creek. Transit minister Fraser and Don Phillips announce contract worth 568 408 dollars awarded to Columbia Biulithic Ltd. of Vancouver. Up to 35 workers to be employed. total project cost 1 116 000 dollars including engineering.

Northeast B C coal plans face Japanese and Ottawa roadblock

Pressure from Japan and a hard federal stance on subsidies cloud northeast British Columbia coal development. Ottawa says no progress unless BC funds a massive subsidy. Canadian firms Teck and Denison push proposals, but Japanese may reject them without provincial support. a Japanese mission will visit BC at month end to decide on long term supply.

Rape suspect apprehended in Chetwynd case

Police report a 16 year old Chetwynd girl was allegedly raped in the early hours of August 1. A juvenile boy is in custody charged with the offense. RCMP meanwhile report a string of vehicle crashes including a truck overturning near the Rodeo Grounds turnoff and officers rushing 63 km to a Pine Pass crash near the Westcoast Transmission Plant with no injuries but significant property damage.

Sulphur blaze on train reaches Chetwynd

Three cars of burning sulphur were transported to Chetwynd from Taylor on the B C Rail line around 6 pm Sunday August 2. Fire Chief Bob McNabb and officers were alerted. The engineer said diesel ash likely ignited the sulphur. Canutec advised using dirt or sand to smother the fire.

Black Bros expands Real Estate with Cascade Realty in Chetwynd

Black Bros National Real Estate Service opens a second franchise with Cascade Realty Ltd in Chetwynd, 60 miles west of Dawson Creek. Five representatives serve a town of 4,000, with projected area growth to over 18,000 in five years and 1979 population up eighteen percent. Cascade Realty manager Dale Draper praises access to out of town buyers, computer cataloging, and training via Block Bros, noting staff unchanged despite a name change from Dolan Realty Ltd.

BCGEU calls for a provincial press council in BC

The BCGEU executive passed a resolution urging a British Columbia press council modeled after Quebec Ontario and Alberta councils. General Secretary John Fryer said the move seeks a forum for complaints against media by individuals and groups. The resolution asks the BC Federation of Labour to pursue enabling legislation directing the publishing industry to form a press council.
