Fight Fort St John move Lands office protest closes Dawson Creek

Workers at the Dawson Creek District office of the Lands Parks and Housing Branch faced a temporary picket line this morning over a government closure and reorganization. BCGEU rep Kim Smith says the layoffs totaling 27 in the Peace Region and four at Fort St. John include two redundancies and a non-member termination, with an estimated $500000 local economic hit.

Doctor Webb Leaves Chetwynd District Hospital After Inquiry

The district hospital issues a notice detailing the June 30 to July 20 1983 proceedings of a joint conference committee regarding Doctor Webb. The committee found no question of medical competence, only internal matters, and suspended its investigation after Webb’s resignation.

Fishermen face charges over Hudson Hope closure near Site One dam

Conservation officers report a dozen anglers from Fort St. John and Dawson Creek were cited for fishing in a closed area below Site One dam at Hudson Hope. Many claim no knowledge of the closure or its purpose as rainbow trout congregate below the dam each spring and may be harmed by overfishing.

Vintage Car Club Tour Through Chetwynd Charms Town Parade

The Vintage Car Club of Canada toured Peace River area July 27 28 visiting Chetwynd arriving after Chamber of Commerce check in and souvenir bag pickup. An estimated 600 watched 50 plus vintage cars as MC John Jackman welcomed guests with greetings from local dignitaries. The Lions Club hosted a steak barbecue and several visitors stayed with locals.

Shorter barriers proposed at Chetwynd intersection

Nordlund sparked a District Council push echoed by 800 signatories opposing the barrier claiming it divided business and hindered north access traffic. A Ministry of Transportation letter says the district decides, with a plan to install a shortened post barrier on 50th Street paths 97 and 29 and monitor traffic after traffic signals energize.

Royal Conservatory of Music results in Dawson Creek

In June the Royal Conservatory of Music held practical exams at Dawson Creek College facilities. Chetwynd pupils achieved honours and passes across grades two three and five under Mrs Erika Naumann. Notable results include Tammy Dunnist April Klaassen Nancy Yee Karen Yee Miriam Klaassen Linda Yee Maureen Wright and other siblings. Congratulations to students and parents.
