Indian led changes to Indian Act pass and file in Commons
The June 2 1988 debate in the House of Commons covered four Indian issues. Bill C 115 known as the Kamloops Amendment passed, granting band councils taxing power over reserve lands and allowing leases as collateral without losing reserve status. It replaces surrender with designated lands and enables economic development. Bill C 73 Ontario Indian Lands Agreement confirms Canada’s right to revenues from past sales and sets terms for tripartite talks to regain unsold lands, with 100 percent royalties on future mineral sales. Bill C 123 Minor's Trust updates duties on payments to guardians and raises estates shares from 2000 to 75000. Bill C 122 Band By laws exempts bands from Gazette publication. Bill C 115 referred to Senate. others to committee for study with potential submissions.
