Pollution study links fine particulates to health harms
A provincial study led by Dr. Sverre Vedal of the University of British Columbia finds a link between fine airborne particulates and heart and lung diseases. The report estimates 82 early deaths, 69 extra hospitalizations, 283 more ER visits for asthma, and 71 extra cases of chronic bronchitis or emphysema in a typical period. The particles come mainly from vehicle exhaust in cities and wood smoke elsewhere. the province plans new clean air measures focusing on vehicle emissions in the lower Fraser Valley. Local resident Jere Franklin says more pollution facts from the Chetwynd area may follow. A logging truck engine fire on the North Access Road in Chetwynd drew quick local response. cause remains undetermined due to heat.
