Pay equity settlement reaches frontline health care workers
About 40 000 female health care workers will receive wage adjustments and retroactive pay from a pay equity settlement decided last fall by an arbitrator. The $25.8 million adjustment, retroactive to April 1, 1996, will boost monthly pay by about $130 and retroactive payments from $960 to $7,700. Chris Allnutt of the Hospital Employees' Union calls the change a long struggle against gender-based wage discrimination in health care.
