Canfor Chetwynd Division may curtail production as officials study reducing to one shift or a shorter work week.BC forest product firms reassess US demand, the major buyer, which has fallen markedly, while Canfor continues on its regular shift schedule.
Finance Minister Hugh Curtis announced Cabinet approval of the mill rate by law of the B C Assessment Authority for 1980. The by law sets a province wide mill rate of 1.295, a 9.4 percent decrease from last year's 1.43. This reduction, the second in two years, reflects a substantial rise in provincial government contribution.
The Chetwynd Arts and Crafts Club announces its 8th Annual Show to be held Saturday May 31 at the Elk's Hall. Open to all ages, exhibitors may submit woodwork macrame quilting and other handicrafts. A categories and rules list will be published next week.
Dorothy Hill has been appointed Executive Assistant to South Peace MLA Don Phillips by order in council on March 6. She arrived in Dawson Creek in 1945 with her family. her father Lyal Dingle was the first manager of the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool here. Dorothy’s career included roles at the Dawson Co-op Store and Field Enterprises Educational Corporation, and she is active in local community work.

A nine p.m. March 27 call from BC Rail Conductor Bob McGuire triggered a rapid rescue by a northbound switcher freight from Fort St. James toward Driftwood. A seriously ill baby at Takla needed transport to Fort St. James Hospital 112 miles away, with the dispatcher in North Vancouver coordinating via microwave radio.
Chetwynd Hudson Hope All Star Bantam Hockey Team finished second in a six-game tournament in Port Coquitlam. Players, managers, and a large group of supporters attended. MVPs included Neil Rogers, Dean Gladue, Kurk Douglas, and Norman Strim.
Mr. Arthur G. Bowes, Provincial Commissioner for British Columbia Yukon Boy Scouts of Canada, will visit Chetwynd on April 17 to present the Merit Award to Howard Wilson. Bowes began as a Scout in England in 1940 and moved to Canada later, becoming an Assistant in 1950.
The Peace River Championship Loggers Sports Day on Saturday May 17, 1980 will host Don Phillips MLA for South Peace River and MP Frank Oberle in the opening ceremony. Organizers note strong attendance from Chetwynd loggers and forest industry sponsors, with contact details for Lorne Harris, John Jackman, and Mrs Marie Rachel. The event highlights BC Northern activity and involves community groups including Scouts with long regional service behind the planning and leadership.
