Special caller coming for dance jamboree

Chetwynd will host an annual Peace River Area Square Dance weekend on April 16 and 17 with Don Davis of Chetwynd found guilty on two unemployment false statement counts and fined $100 each or 15 days in jail. Restitution of $420 is due by May 31 1977. Bob Parrish of Ferndale Washington will be the special caller. Workshops Saturday 2 00 to 4 00 p m and main dance at 8 00 p m at the Elks Hall. Attendance expected from Salmon Arm Edmonton Lloydminster and Northwest Territories.

Four charges suspend sentence for Dawson Creek youth

An 18 year old youth Donald CALLIOU pleaded guilty in Dawson Creek Supreme Court to four break in and theft charges from January to March in Chetwynd. Offences included Northern Metallic Esso bulk plant Beaver Lumber and Chetwynd arena with thousands in damage and stolen power tools. Sentence suspended for two years with probation.

Two Year Grade Eight Program Planned by School Board

The School Board accepts a proposal for a two year grade 8 program aimed at students likely to fail or drop out in Grade 8. District Superintendent Oscar Bedard asked Murray Ryan to explore the plan, with 15 to 20 pupils and active parental support. Year one devotes four blocks to core skills and three blocks to manual trades. In year two students transition into the regular Grade 8 program while continuing skill development.

Limitations set on beverages sold in school District 59 policy

District 59 Peace River South approved a policy limiting elementary school beverage sales to 2 percent milk chocolate milk and unsweetened canned fruit juices. Carbonated drinks and crystal fruit flavored drinks are banned. Trustee Rose Wilson criticized including chocolate milk citing nutrition concerns. Penny Wilson argued for pupil choice noting some prefer regular milk and that chocolate milk can be made from whole milk.

Waves of sunlit week as locals note spring signs

Residents enjoyed warm weather with budding trees and pussy willows this past week. The Square Dance Club wrapped six raffles raising funds for the upcoming Jamboree while Milt Leffler won the prize at the Elks dance and the club raffle for a second time. News includes travel to Vancouver by Mr and Mrs H Janzen and family, Easter visits by Mrs M Atkinson to Chetwynd, and various family trips across Alberta and British Columbia. CNR trains rerouted through Chetwynd due to Jasper route slides. Easter gatherings and local chatter fill the column, with a final note to call if you have news.
