Commencement at Creser Theological Seminary

The Creser Theological Seminary at Pearl Hall hosted its ninth anniversary commencement with Rev Dr Weston presiding. Students and guests heard multiple addresses on religion and scholarship, followed by certificates awarded to graduates and a farewell address to the class of 77. Temperance meetings and local notices filled the remainder of the notices.

Sewing Machine Patents Expire and Open to Public

On Tuesday certain sewing machine patents expired making the vibratory needle and reciprocating shuttle the basis of free competition. The foundation of the double thread machine and the vibratory needle with rotating lock are now common property. The continuous feed and single thread methods, with or without wheel or fore motion, also enter the public domain. The last principle had enabled a monopoly producing four million dollars. Sewing machines will become cheaper benefiting both poor seamstresses and the wealthy.

Final arrangements for General Grant departure

The Councils Committee finalized departure plans for ex President Ulysses S Grant. The steamship John A Warner will carry Grant and companions to New Castle Delaware where he will transfer to the Louisiana. costs cap at 1400 dollars for launch and 21 dollars for the boat. Reports also say George W Childs engaged the Hamilton to convey Mrs Grant and her companions downriver.

Temperance Rally In Philadelphia T A B S Becomes Rally

A large temperance rally held at Beventh and Edgmont avenue featured the St. Michaels T A B S. Philadelphia officials and clergy led speeches by Henry Van Bell James Hogan Griffin Carroll Wanogan and Father Haviland. About two hundred pledged to join the temperance effort. A grand demonstration is planned for Sunday with high anticipation.

Wanamaker's Philadelphia Wearables Emporium Impresses Visitors

An extensive two month old business marks Mr Wanamaker's depot at 13th and Market Philadelphia. The great emporium showcases vast stock low prices and original arrangement, inviting visiting citizens to view sights even without buying.
