Twenty Men Drowned in Jersey City Tunnel Disaster
A fatal shaft accident at the Hudson River Tunnel near Sixteenth Street Jersey City killed twenty workers and left eight saved. Assistant Superintendent Peter Woodland and foremen led the night crew as air locks and shifting supports failed, flooding the shaft and collapsing walls. Survivor Stephen Van Nostrand describes the panicked escape and the doomed rescue effort. The enterprise was established by a California based company with a capital of $10,000,000.
