Washington Feb 25 Representative Gibson of Tennessee introduced a joint resolution directing the president to demand immediate liberty for all American citizens imprisoned in Cuba. The measure authorizes U S ships of war to back the demand and threatens bombardment of Havana and other Cuban ports if not granted within 24 hours.

John Lagale aged 96, repairer for the Brooklyn avenue Cable Railway Company, died in Kansas City while working in a cable conduit. A grip car struck, pulled him, and crushed him against pulleys. he suffered a fatal head wound and extensive body mutilation before death.

House Passes Deficiency Bill Amid Naval Appropriation Debate

Washington February 24 The House approved the general deficiency bill and began work on the naval establishment measure. A long debate over a 1 800 000 grant to the Southern Pacific was decided against striking it out by a 102 to 138 vote. Supporters of back pay to last Congress members lost 96 to 122. Sixteen naval bill cases remain and Mr Grosvenor hinted at an extra session while denying explicit authorization.

Senate negotiates Indian appropriation bill over sectarian schools

In Washington on February 24 the senate debated the Indian appropriation bill focusing on sectarian schools. A clause allows temporary government contracts with such schools when no public schools are available, passing 51 to 8, while a policy to end all sectarian school appropriations was established by amendment but later rejected on a point of order 38 to 32. The Indian bill remained under consideration.

Jacksonville dispatch reports General Gomes led a bold advance against Moron trocha on eastern Havana isle. His 5,000 cavalry and 000 infantry seized a fort at midnight, routing Spanish defenders and capturing arms and ammunition as the column pressed onward.
