Donations from Vito's, Del Farm, Rice's, Weber Cleaners, A&P, and Hillman's funded apples, nuts, candy canes, and oranges. Mrs. Winter, white and longtime resident, praised the effort as beautiful though modest and noted she plans to move to a quieter nearby area with fewer white residents.

Smith sues Continental Illinois Bank for racial discrimination
Charles L. Keys, a former Continental Illinois Bank cost accountant, filed a $1 million damages suit in U.S. District Court through attorney W. Mauldin Smith alleging racial discrimination and violations of constitutional and civil rights after being fired on May 5, 1971 for refusing to cut his sideburns to meet bank dress codes. Five youths charged in nurse murder on West 72nd
Dorothy Singleton 22, a Illinois Bell employee, was shot returning from shopping at 1236 W 72nd. Police say a 13 year old, spurred by older youths, sought to rob her then fired one shot. Five youths identified as Eddie Burke Floyd Brewer Leon Wilson and two others were arrested. the 14 year old and the 13 year old face Juvenile Court while four others face felony court. Singleton died at St Bernard Hospital.
