Representatives from 51 commercial organizations at the 17th Lake Mohonk Conference on International Arbitration in Mohonk Lake N Y May 26 telegrammed President Taft and Senator Cullom to endorse treaties of unlimited arbitration with Great Britain France and other nations and urge speedy success with such treaties.

Washington May 26 Representatives of the locomotive firemen of the Southern Railway rejected President Finley’s proposal to send the wage controversy and threatened strike to a mediation board. They demand a 20 percent raise and will not accept other offers. An additional conference was requested by Finley as Vice-President Teat noted the men will not rush judgment. The firemen argued Southern wages lag behind other first class roads even with a 4 cent 100 miles increase for large engines and 11 cents for small engines. President Taft pressed an electric button in Washington to start Mobile Alabama’s parade marking the 200th founding anniversary by French settlers. The march included 300 blue jackets and Marines from Pensacola under Rear Admirals Ward and Lu c ien Young. A commemorative tablet was unveiled at the old French Palace Royal in City Hall.
Lewis Strang in a Case car led preliminaries for the Memorial Day 500 at Indianapolis. Joe Jager and William Jones, both in Case cars, followed close behind. no times were posted.

New York May 26 The consolidation of the Southern Iron and Steel Company and the Alabama Consolidated Coal and Iron Company is practically consummated. The terms of the merger will be made public shortly.
In Washington May 26 The Lorimer case is to be threshed on the floor with a strong expectation that the Martin democratic resolution will be adopted possibly with changes. La Follette seeks a new senate investigation while Republicans prefer the democratic stance. House business is light as Democrats plan recesses to dodge the discharge calendar. Adjournment may come next Tuesday with a possible Friday follow up.

Eulogies were delivered at the ministry of war by Antoine Pierre A Duboist Henri Birron and General Michel. General Fracois Goiran became minister of war in Berteaux’s stead. Arkansas forest abolition bill introduced by Rep Jamesway seeks restoration of lands to public domain. Warren V Hall confirmed as postmaster in North Charlotte.
Francisco Leon de La Barra, Mexico’s foreign minister and former ambassador to the United States, took the oath as provisional president following Porfirio Diaz’s resignation. The capital stayed orderly as De La Barra vowed to serve until general elections are held.
