New evidence surfaces as Senator LaFollette holds floor to press inquiry into Lorimer's senate seat. Wisconsin issue tied to Dillingham and other resolutions as the Illinois investigation spurs debate on statehood and broader graft probes.
The United States minister to Switzerland, Henry Sherman Bou, presented his credentials to President Ruehet today. The ceremony marked the start of his mission, with Ferrer and government officials in attendance.
May 23 hearing occupied the time as delegates discussed a church case against the Catholic establishment in the United States. Speakers from San Francisco to Montgomery voiced views on church proximity and alleged pernicious activity.
Associated Press report from Gallatin Tennessee recounts the lynching of Jim Sweat an 18 year old negro ex convict by a mob near the city. Sweat killed David Barry a Sumner county court member and a negro woman who was a cook in the flats.
News from Concord reports the death of L. McKee Morrison after a mule he was driving panicked and crashed into his barnyard. The prominent farmer and Confederate veteran, about 64, died shortly after the injury. Funeral set for Rocky River Presbyterian Church tomorrow at 10 AM. Morrison was uncle by marriage to Mrs. W. R. Wearn.
President W. H. Merrill reports at the National Fire Protection Association convention in New York that over 20,000 lives and two billion dollars in property have been sacrificed to fire in the past fifteen years. Officials from fire prevention branches speak at the fifteenth annual session.
The Southern Baptist convention committee on women's work reported year end receipts totaling 127900 for foreign missions 83850 for home missions 1219 for Sunday school work 1389 for the Margaret home 2963 for the teachers training school and 5907 for school enlargement. Miss Marie Buhlmien spoke on immigrant work in Baltimore. The obsequies committee noted the deaths of former vice presidents Dr W H Wetsett and Dr A J Thomas. The convention adjourned to meet next year in Oklahoma City.
Juarez, Mexico May 23. A telegram to Francisco I. Madero Jr. reports that Vice President Corral has tendered his resignation. The move is seen as a step before Diaz’s resignation, with Diaz expected soon. Madero and his party plan to travel to Mexico City to consult with Senor de la Barra on political reorganization.
Knoxville report says firemen on the Southern Railway may strike at noon tomorrow if a new wage scale is not granted or a compromise reached. Washington talks continue as President Finley argues concessions would cost about 400000 dollars yearly, raising wages by about 27.8 percent.
Greensboro N C May 23 A threatened strike by firemen on all Southern railway lines grows urgent as a local union delegate heads to Washington to meet President Finley and lodge members over a 10 percent wage demand. Officials say the road cannot grant the increase and talks with President Finley and General Manager Coapman continue in Washington.
Atlantic City May 23 The Presbyterian General Assembly passed by acclamation a resolution to raise 6,000,000 for a fund to support superannuated clergy. The assembly also opposed Navy acceptance of a silver service for the battleship Utah with Brigham Young engraving.
One thousand delegates attended the fourth national convention at the First Presbyterian church in Pittsburg. The meeting discussed campaign strategies to win 25 000 souls and raise 1 000 000 for missions during the coming year.
Birmingham hosts the fourth National Good Roads Congress with more than a dozen states represented. May or Culpepper Exum and Gov. Emmett O Neal speak as Dr Tait Butler and Arthur C Jackson lead the opening program. Delegates tour street paving displays and view roadbuilding machinery in the city.
The British armed cruiser Cumberland reports to the Admiralty via wireless that at the mouth of the English Channel she has recovered an empty lifeboat from the overdue British steamer Cayo Largo.
In Washington on May 23 the debate on statehood for Arizona and New Mexico included sharp attacks on the judiciary recall provision in Arizona's constitution. Representative Houston warned recalls threaten court integrity while Representative Martin W Littlejohn supported the challenge in his maiden House speech.
Rome Georgia May 23. While returning from the well Bell McNulty 11 daughter of Mr and Mrs W J McNulty was seized at her home door choked to insensibility bound and gagged. The assailant said to be a white man fled when the mother frightened him away. Efforts to catch the criminal remain fruitless.
Neal D. Ivey son of Dr. T. N. Ivey formerly of Raleigh and editor of The Christian Advocate Nashville has been named temporary assistant at the Beaufort laboratory bureau of fisheries in Washington.
Premier Monis, narrowly spared when Train's monoplane plowed into spectators during the Paris to Madrid race opening, survived the incident and passed a good night in Paris on May 23. Minister of War Berteaux was killed in the crash.
A bottle fished from Pensacola Bay contained a note signed Dorothy Arnold and a lock of hair. Dated January 28 1911 from Escambia Bay the note asks the finder to send the hair to her parents in New York if fifty years pass. The author’s identity remains unconfirmed and Escambia Bay lies about 20 miles east of Pensacola.
In Brambach Saxony on May 23 a woman driven by a theft accusation killed her five children and then took her own life authorities said.
Angouleme France May 23 crowds gathered as the Paris Madrid aeroplane race began. Garros led from Angouleme at 5 13 to San Sebastian then to Biarritz and finally to San Sebastian. Vedrine and Gilbert faced fog and misdirection with respected landings at Biarritz and Basque coast.
Rochester N Y May 23 The Standard Oil Company trial on an indictment for rebates on oil shipments resumed today with a surprise plea by the defense They contended the company had been convicted and fined for the same offenses and argued it cannot be punished twice for the same crime The government considered the motion to quash indictments.
Los Angeles May 23. Structural iron workers Bert H. Conners and John Maunsell Parks were arrested on charges of conspiring to dynamite the county hall of records under construction by non union workers. A grand jury meeting was set to sift charges against the accused and others including a woman.
Joe Wentz Jr sixteen a Charlotte High School graduate candidate drowned in the Catawba River while on a picnic trip with a Benson party from the tenth and eleventh grades. The body had not been recovered by press time.
Henry J. and Benjamin J. Duveen, famed art dealers, pleaded guilty in U S district court to undervaluation of imports. The judge postponed sentence to tomorrow as bail remains set. Earlier, Joseph J. and Louis J. Duveen pled guilty in March and were fined ten thousand dollars. The firm has already settled with authorities for about 1.2 million dollars.
Mobile Ala May 23 with every grand officer present and nearly every state represented the supreme lodge Knights of Honor opened its fourth bi annual conclave. J H Bentley supreme dictator presided as greetings and responsive in open session followed a carriage procession of grand officers and state carriages. A key proposal aims to cut per capita expense from thirty to ten percent.
Tallahassee May 23 State Senator Henderson introduced a bill to appropriate 5000 dollars as a reward for the apprehension of members of the mob which lynched six negroes near Lake City Florida early Sunday. The measure votes tomorrow.
