The Newbern hose wagon competition concluded with Ace Newbern taking first prize, Kinston third, and Capital Hose No 2 earning a third place. Capital Hose Company won the prettiest run and Rescue No 1 posted the fastest time as crowds watched the event.
Fire department notes list time trials and placements for horse drawn wagons in Newberne events. Records show No 1 and No 2 teams posting times around 30 to 37 seconds with various vesicle and relief mentions. Chief of Fire Department in Charlotte cited as a reference point for the fastest race in 1835.
Thousands filled the fine race course on Led Street for the morning program of wagon races. Notable performances included Asheville No 1 with a 26 city water prize and Raleigh No 1 posting 31 3 5 seconds in a fast dash, while Newberne No 1 and No 2 carried strong showings in multiple heats. The day featured swift placings from Atlantic and Kinston teams, with observers cheering the winner in the final races as the event closed.
William G. McAdoo and Mrs. J Borden Hisan were thrown from a car returning from Farminsdale sanatorium where both are directors. McAdoo suffered two broken ribs and injuries to his right arm but will remain in hospital for a day. Mrs Harriman had minor cuts and bruises.
Snow fell this morning in Yellowstone Park and freezing weather was reported in Wyoming and Nevada. The Mid dle and Eastern states sweltered in the hottest weather of the year. Weather experts predicted a general break in the heat within 36 to 48 hours with warm conditions returning tonight and Saturday in the East. Cooler weather was noted along the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains and Plateau region as a disturbance moved eastward from the North Pacific coast.
Glenn Falls N Y May 19 Fire starting in Johnsburg crossed the Sacandaga River and burned more than 20000 acres of heavy standing timber. The flames menaced Bakers Mills until a heavy rain doused the blaze and halted the spread.
The Interstate Commerce Commission allows railways in central territory including Ohio Indiana Illinois and Michigan to charge higher interstate passenger fares than intrastate for trips where states set a two cent per mile rate.
Jim Honeycut t and Conley J Tucker two Stanley County men were captured by Constable Fowler and Deputy Griffith while operating an illicit distillery in Monroe North Carolina They face preliminary hearing and possible transfer to revenue officers Charges include illicit distillery and unlawful whiskey sales Witnesses reported over an hour of observation before arrest and the wrecking of the still 15 empty barrels three four gallon jugs and one gallon jug of whiskey were seized The land owner is Cathey Brothers of Charlotte though the tenant name is unknown General Bryce Arrested In San Diego Mexican consul Dr J D Prieto informed US authorities of the request to detain Bryce He was released after being cleared and transported with Captain Hopkins and S A Milburn to Fort Rosecrans
The government sues the lumber trade, charging a giant conspiracy to keep prices high and blacklist competitors. Ten trade groups and 150+ individuals are named as defendants, led by the Eastern States Retail Lumber Dealers Association with affiliates across New York Connecticut Massachusetts Rhode Island Baltimore New Jersey Philadelphia and Washington DC. The suit seeks a permanent injunction and rests on alleged illegal restraints of trade under the Sherman Act.
The American Cotton Manufacturers Association meets in Richmond on May 19 with expected final adjournment after addressing cotton exchange issues. President Arthur R. Marsh of the New York Cotton Exchange and Lewis W. Parker of Greenville, chair of the relations committee, debate scope and policy. The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled that without routing instructions a shipper may compel movement via the cheapest available route. The decision, granted as reparations to Goodkind Brothers of Helena Montana, targets the Chicago Indianapolis and Louisville Railway and other carriers and settles a long running dispute.
In Louisville the 71st general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States (Southern) moved swiftly on routine business with Rev. Russell Cecil in the chair. Rev. T H Rice delivered a wide ranging address on the present and future proceedings followed by reports from seminaries women societies and secretaries. E W Smith of Louisville planned to speak on the churchs future in the evening.
Washington May 19 the senate passed favorably on Warren Vines Hall's confirmation for postmaster at North Charlotte reflecting Senate action on a local appointment and naming Hall to the position.
In Chattanooga Tennessee on May 19 the jury found Dr John Sherman guilty of murder in the second degree for killing his brother in law Thomas B Norman in East Chattanooga on February 5. The verdict carries a ten year term and Sherman showed stoic resolve throughout the trial. Bonds set at 10000 dollars and a motion for a new trial was entered. A separate note covers a May 19 train trip of veterans to Vicksburg for the dedication of Wisconsin's monument.
Jacksonville Florida May 19 Oklahoma City will be the next meeting place for the Southern Baptist Convention following a committee decision this morning. The convention is expected to approve the recommendation. A debate over resolutions on secular issues arose with supporters urging broader arbitration and crime concerns. The discussion paused as a special order and was tabled, leaving foreign missions to continue the day. In Ireland Miss Dorothy Campbell defeated Miss Violet Hezlet to win the British women’s golf title by three up with two to play.
In Chicago May 19 the child sickness rate in poorer city and county districts surged from eight to nearly sixty percent due to extreme heat. Free ice distribution was organized by county officials to address the crisis.
Atlantic City reports the Presbyterian General Assembly elects John F. Carson moderator and reviews reports on inter church federation. The church notes 60.9 percent non church membership nationwide and rises in vacancies from 1886 to 2167 between 1909 and 1910.
