May 12. Carl Malum, 18, of Georgia, a worker at a coastal line yard, was killed when he tried to alight from a moving passenger train and was struck by the wheels as he stood on a coal pile. He had been in Lake Ree two weeks.
San Diego May 12 Captain Victor Blue head of staff to Admiral Thomas on the cruiser California has been detached from this station and ordered to Washington for service on the general naval board.
Pittsburg May 12 Charles C Schad former member of select council was placed on trial in criminal court before Judges Frazer and Shafer on two charges of bribery in connection with councilmanic ordinances This is Schad s second trial.
Chicago May 12 Judge Carpenter overruled the demurrers of the Chicago packers in the beef trust cases. He held the Sherman act constitutional and that indictments against J Ogden Armour and others are valid. The ruling supports enforcement of anti trust provisions and notes the packers aimed to eliminate competition in setting prices.
In Tampa on May 12 the cigar makers strike ended with about 5,000 workers returning to their benches. A movement to petition the state pardon board for Jose de la Campa Britt Russell and J F Bartlum was launched, and strikers were assured leaders would not face jail within thirty days to allow further appeals.
Chattanooga Tennessee May 12 United States District Attorney J B Cox filed complaint and charges of violation of the eight hour law against the Chattanooga and Tennessee River Power Company for building the lock and dam at Hales Bar. The warrant was served by the deputy marshal and the case will be tried next week.
In Fez today, Sultan's troops clashed with rebels and three of the Sultan's soldiers were killed. The report cites ongoing skirmishing amid tensions in the region.
London May 12 representatives urging sugar tax remission met with David Lloyd George. The chancellor said the duty oppressed the poor and hindered inquiry but could not afford to abandon a tax bringing in fifteen million dollars.
Washington May 12 representative Bathrick of Ohio introduced a resolution to shield government workers who testify before congressional investigating committees from retaliation. The measure states officials fear persecution for testimony and bars supersession rating cuts or dismissal for such testimony.

Special to The News Raleigh May 12 Lewis West, a Black prisoner, was electrocuted in the state prison for the murder of Chief of Police Stalling of Spring Hope last September. Warden Sales activated the first 1800 volts at 10 27 the execution followed the usual procedure with a second voltage and West died eleven minutes later. He did not speak and was attended by Rev J E King colored, showing notable nerve during the ordeal.
In Juarez Senors Obregon and Braniff, acting as unofficial mediators, will meet provisional president Madero to pursue a fresh peace initiative. A cabinet session will decide if a direct approach with the Federal government may resume negotiations, as rebels tighten control and guard gains after Juarez.
Former New York Republican State Chairman Timothy L. Woodruff said at the White House that continued bad business conditions could allow the Democratic Party to carry New York in the presidential race. He blamed business interests for faulting the party in power over famines, depressions, and other disturbances.
Pensacola reports confirm the vessel wrecked in a gulf storm two weeks ago is the Queen of the Standard Oil Company. Five crewmen drowned. The schooner, carrying oil in barrels, was bound from Tampa to Panama City. Identification came from rescuers in small boats as several steamers had previously sighted the wreck.

Rome May 12 Pope Pius X continues to suffer a gout attack though doctors say his condition is not alarming. Public audiences scheduled for this morning were canceled as invitations were turned away at the Vatican while private audiences were held for the day.

In Pittsburgh a separate reported split between Pennsylvania railway officials and striking shopmen resumes talks to end the walkout.
Chattanooga Tenn May 12 The conference of joint Methodists commissioners halted after debate on bishop election and jurisdiction. One plan would extend jurisdiction nationwide while Southern members urged division only with invitations. Adjournment followed without a decision, but belief is the issue may be amicably settled later.
The board of canvassers refused the city school committee’s bid to recount votes in the recent bond election. Initial results showed 898 votes for a $50,000 school bond, but after purges the bonds failed by 123 votes. The school board will seek a summer election by the aldermanic board.
King George and Queen Mary opened the festival of the empire at Crystal Palace in a semi state procession from Buckingham Palace to College Road. Enormous crowds lined the route with 40,000 schoolchildren in Camberwell Green and American ambassador Mr. Reid participated in the ceremony.
Chicago launches a new motion to place municipal bonds on the market. Council Bluffs Iowa issues bonds for various city purposes and will offer them at auction to the highest bidder at a principal hotel next week. The city clerk of Council Bluffs will preside and provide buyers with an opinion from a Chicago attorney firm approving the bond issue.
Delegates at the American Federation of Musicians annual convention in Atlanta set new pay scales for traveling orchestra members. Salaries would rise from 35 to 40 dollars per week, leaders to six dollars, and performers limited to nine shows per week.
Savannah to Charlotte trip by automobile clubs yesterday included a luncheon and dance at the Manufacturers’ Club, with cars displayed before First Presbyterian church. Miss Lucy Oates led the reception committee as motorists from Georgia and the Carolinas toured the city to advocate routing the National Highway via Atlanta Columbia Augusta Savannah. The endurance run became a speed ride at 45 to 60 mph through Mecklenburg county with crowds watching from Tryon Street and Akinde Square. Some returned to Savannah for the Granger Cup, others shipped their cars or took trains, all praising Charlotte’s reception.
Miss Lillian Swygert, heir to a multi million estate, continues her work as a schoolteacher in Atlanta. She arrived six years ago to teach and soon inherited 16,000 from her father in Columbia, 14,000 from a half sister, and additional sums from other relatives. Last November she received 6,000 from an uncle in Germany, the latest bequest disclosed.
A blaze in downtown Columbia Tennessee today caused about 325000 in damage. Enoch Stevens William Hooten and W Satterfield were pinned by falling walls and rescued after heroic efforts. Origin of the fire undetermined.
The Georgia-Florida United Commercial Travelers in Savannah select Atlanta as the site for the next annual convention to be held in May 1912. Officers will be elected this afternoon. Visitors were entertained with a steamboat ride along the river this morning and Baymen of Baggad will hold an initiation this evening.
The Boston mine at Larksville owned by Delaware and Hudson Coal Co. was extinguished after a fire that suffocated five men. Officials say damage to the workings will be comparatively slight.
