Chicago's Edward Hines testified before the Lorimer committee claiming President Taft sought Lorimer's election and would aid his campaign. Hines produced a letter fragment from Henry S. Boutell asserting the president's interest in uniting factions behind Lorimer. He explained it referenced personal affairs and was separated from the main letter.

Atlanta July 24 The gubernatorial campaign centers on two men Pope Brown spoke at Waycross and Judge Richard Russell set to speak at Dublin this Wednesday. Other contenders are mentioned but not yet declared the vacancy timing and primary date uncertain. The line of succession and election scheduling follow state law once Hoke Smith resigns.
Reports indicate Niles Taylor a Negro shot five white men at a Claiborne parish saw mill on Saturday. He fled after a gunfight with farmers, killing John Thompson and wounding Joe Harrell Robert L Thurman and Will Johnson. A posse chased him to his father’s cabin but he fired again and escaped.
Charleston, July 24. Thomas A. Burchfield, an elderly baseball fan, was fined fifty dollars in the police court today for striking umpire Kelly and interfering with police during the near riot at the baseball park. He had previously struck Manager Clark of Columbia for good pitching against Charleston. Two other fans were fined lesser amounts and a third’s case continued.
Washington July 24 The house steel trust committee resumed its session today and Chairman Stanley entered a copy of the ironclad agreement made November 9 1900 among eleven steel firms to apportion shipments of steel plates. Penalties for overproduction were common and monthly sworn statements were required. The document lists firm by firm share percentages and exemptions with Carnegie Steel at 46.25 percent and Glasgon Iron Company authorized up to 40000 tons by year end 1901. End of year balancing could forfeit unproduced tonnage divided among others.
Washington July 24 Attorney General Wickersham branded as false delegate charges that he shielded Alaskan criminals and let the statute of limitations run in a coal contract fraud case He told the House Judiciary Committee the Douglass affidavit misstates facts and no Captain Jarvis or John H Bullock affidavits exist Special Assistant McNamara found no supporting documents and the statute of limitations would not run until March 1912
In Edinburgh the French aviator Vedrines on a Morans-Borel monoplane set the fastest time from Hendon to Edinburgh, covering 343 miles in under six hours. Beaumont followed, Weyman repaired a propeller and then returned to the race. Valentine and Cody also feature among early leaders with Harrogate and Newcastle legs completed. Official times show Vedrines 3h 3m 4s, Beaumont 3h 7m 54s, Valentine 3h 39m 28s.
Geneva reports Homer Diman an 18 year old from Arlington Mass was missing since July 5 on the Dent du Midi in the Alps. His body was found today embedded in ice in a glacier crevice and brought to Silvan where he had lived with his mother.
London July 24 wild disorder marked the Commons session as Premier Asquith sought to move the Lords amendments to the veto bill. He warned the Lords or risk royal prerogative to create new peers amid cheers and jeers from across benches. Parallel reports from Alton Missouri show harvesters getting three whiskey rations. Cleveland, July 24. Only clear weather can ensure a big financial success for the Joss memorial and benefit ball game. Proceeds go to the widow and children of the late Ad die Joss, Cleveland pitcher. Players, club owners, and officials from the American League and national clubs have donated from $25 to $100. The game features the Cleveland Club versus the All Stars of the American League, managed by James McAleer of the Washington Club.
A congressional sub-committee hearing in New York continues the sugar trust investigation. Claus Spreckels testifies about exporting 35 000 to 40 000 barrels to the Pacific coast while New York prices lagged by 60 to 70 points. He says wholesalers avoided the market, fearing coast interests, and the shipment was sold to retailers as prices fell from 5 60 to 5 70 per hundred pounds over three months.
Bloodhounds assist New York police as detectives pursue highwaymen who attempted to wreck a Long Island railroad train near Valley Stream. A 15 car passenger train halted within 15 feet of an obstruction after engineer Whitford saw a hole in the track with a tied rope securement.
An explosion in Cary Indiana injured eight people and damaged a three story building. Police attribute it to leaking gas though some residents suspect a bomb. Authorities investigated the cause as victims were treated locally.
