Mass of Maine crew bones found near wreck

Havana reports a mass of bones recovered from the Maine wreck near the central super-structure and inverted conning tower. The bones show fire damage and are believed to be sailors from the starboard main deck last seen during the hot night of the disaster. total recovered rises to eleven with more expected Monday.

Durham Man Ends Life With Razor

John Alexander Vickers of a prominent Durham family committed suicide near his home in the afternoon by slitting his throat with a razor. He was found in a field with fatal injuries and died before aid arrived. He leaves a wife, three children, a brother, and two sisters. Authorities report no clear reason for his act and note prior melancholy with no evident mental disturbance. He was about 30 years old.

Detective Burns Reaches Indianapolis

Detectives in Indianapolis report that Burns returned from Europe and faced four grand jury indictments for kidnapping John J. McNamara. He pleaded not guilty and posted $2,500 bond on each indictment as Judge Markey scheduled trials for September or October.

Cholera Case Reported in New York Harbor Sailor

A Spanish sailor Manuel Bermudes who arrived July 1 on a tramp steamer was found suffering from cholera at Bellevue hospital and moved to Swinburne Island. During the day the ninth death was reported at Swinburne with no new cases.

Taft Announces Delayed Signing of Arbitration Treaty

President Taft said the signing would be delayed due to the absence of British and French ambassadors. Ambassador Jusserand will sign the French treaty in Paris, Bryce will sign the English copy in Maine, and Secretary Knox will sign in Washington. If completed before Congress, the two treaties go to the Senate for ratification. Other likely signatories include Germany, Holland, and Sweden.
