Former U S senator Nelson W Aldrich testifies amid the Lorimer investigation saying Edward Hines discussed a possible Illinois election result and his replacement. Aldrich recalls several conversations but cannot fix dates while noting Hines pressed for a Senate outcome and discussed President Tafts views.
New York reports another ship from cholera country the Principe di Piemont from Genoa and Naples anchored in quarantine with hundreds of immigrants to undergo bacteriological tests before entering the mainland. No new cases or deaths since last week. Washington orders Italian immigrant tests nationwide with cost sharing from New York and Massachusetts.
In a night encounter near Block Island the invading fleet led by Rear Admiral Hugo Osterhaus allegedly penetrated the defending line commanded by Edward W. Eberle. The maneuvering involved Washington and Chicago as scouts, a submarine attack repelled, and a torpedo destroyer targeted in the supposed victory for the invaders.
A Colorado and Southern passenger train from Denver to Trinidad plunged from an embankment eighteen miles south of Trinidad, killing engineer Joseph Ketchbarger and fatally injuring fireman E C Starr. None of the passengers were hurt. Heavy weekly rains contributed to the accident.
Miss Ethel Barrymore wife of Russell Griswold Colt arrived in Chicago on the way to New York from the Pacific coast and declined to discuss divorce rumors. The report of her divorce plans is denied. Paris reports say Jusserand would retire or be reassigned after a Franco American arbitration treaty, but that claim is denied by the foreign office.
Ballots close at 10 sharp and subscriptions must be in to count. Contestants and supporters gather at The News Office for the final tally as high interest surrounds the pony outfit bicycles and a diamond ring prize. Winners to be announced in tomorrow's edition with standings.
The Durham jury found Leander S. Rochelle guilty in the famous blind tiger raids. Rochelle's alibi failed to counter the state's case. Of sixty tigers caught in the raid three months earlier, only two were acquitted and ten more remain to be tried.
Washington July 20. Commissioner Herbert Knox Smith refuses to reveal details of the U S Steel inquiry citing law and presidential authority. Smith will take the issue to President Taft as the steel probe resumes after a month and he testifies first. Lisbon July 20. Advices from Guimaraes report severe clashes between residents and troops on the Spanish frontier with many wounded before order was restored.
Cape Haitien July 20 The city is at the mercy of revolutionists with pillaging reported. Generals opposed to the revolution seek refuge in foreign consulates. The French consul was slightly wounded while protecting local authorities.
In New Orleans rumors that a Franco German war had begun were dismissed as market manipulation from New York. Cotton futures advanced briefly on the whispered news as traders acted on the unconfirmed reports. In Sharon Springs New York two major hotels, the Fethers and Rockville, were ruined by a morning fire forcing guests into the street.
New York July 20 John E H Parsons former counsel for the American Sugar Refining Company told a special congressional committee the sugar combine formed in 1887. He said he would take the blame for creating the Refineries Company and that politics helped disorganize the North River Refinery. The witness linked the merger to the rise of the sugar trust and compared it to the later Standard Oil formation.
Denver July 20 A code of ethics for the real estate business advocated before the convention of the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges by Vice-President Frank Craven of Philadelphia and Col J O Ray of Louisville probably will be adopted before sessions close. Canadian reciprocity approved by the committee on national legislation.
Ceiba Honduras July 20 Don Pedro Bertrand father of the Honduras president was buried yesterday with military honors. He was 86 years of age.
Washington reports the Utah will require about 1200 sailors to join the Atlantic fleet under Admiral Osterhaus after maneuvers. The crew covers machinists electricians telegraph operators engineers boiler tenders firemen marines and other specialists with marines manning secondary batteries and landing parties.

In New York on July 20 mysterious enemies pursued Frank Rosini a young Italian for over a year making another fatal attempt. He was shot on a street and doctors fear he may die. Rosini vows recovery and refuses to aid investigators. He has survived four prior shootings noted by medical journals and shown at clinics.
In Wisconsin north of Lacrosse toward Winona thousands of farmers suspend work to hunt Edward Robinette, a black farm hand who shot Sylvia Price, daughter of his employer, after she rejected him. He remains at large as authorities and farmers race to capture him. the injured girl’s condition is reported as possibly improving.
In South Norwalk Connecticut Miss Eva Hammond of Coaticook Canada lies injured at her uncle’s home with a bullet at the brain base his 12 year old accuser William Beers says a passing car ran over his bantam chicken and he sought vengeance. Chinese Troops Mutiny Reported In Mongolia
Aviator Aitkin fell today near Fort Madison Iowa while piloting a bi plane. He escaped unharmed though the aircraft was badly damaged and the incident occurred on July 20.
Three masked robbers stopped the eastbound North Coast Limited near Buffalo North Dakota around 11 pm, collecting about 500 in cash from day coach passengers and wounding Engineer S P Olson in the chest. They fled by awaiting car. Sheriff and deputies pursued on a special train. A second robbery report from St Paul notes Dr J W Guest and N V McMillan losing checks and cash.
In Washington on July 19 Senator Works of California, an insurgent Republican, urged immediate passage of the Canadian reciprocity bill. He defended Taft, saying the president did not use undue influence and is a capable lawyer who would not overstep bounds. In Kansas City two men robbed the Franklin Jewelry Co, wounded bystander B A Seitz during a pursuit.
