Prominent witnesses testified in the Mrs Laura Farnsworth Schenk case in Wheeling West Virginia. The jury disagreed on the murder punishment and a new trial will be held. Eleanor Kline the detective nurse testified she was offered 1000 to poison Schenk. Dan Phillips said he spent time with the defendant and accepted gifts from her. Allen Evans a nurse testified on joy rides. Kline’s testimony was most damaging.

Real estate deals closed yesterday afternoon with Mr Geo Stephens purchasing three adjoining farms east of Charlotte from Elizabeth Wakefield and J D Foard holdings. Wakefield 20 acres changed hands for 11000 while Foard 9 acres fetched 10000. Harris farm 200 to 300 acres near Belt road reported at about 300 dollars per acre but unverified.

New Yorker Dies of Hodgkinson's Disease
Carleton S. Carpenter, 31, a White Plains engineer, died at St. Luke's Hospital on December 19 after a puzzling illness. Autopsy initially offered no clue, but later tests confirmed Hodgkin's disease, an Oriental fever affecting the spleen and resembling tuberculosis. Carpenter, a New York University graduate, stood six feet five inches tall and was renowned for his physical stature. The origin of his illness remains unknown.

Fatal Near Beer Fight Leads to Murder Charge
Special to The Sunday News Durham NC January 28 A fatal fight between G H Dove and Joe Roycroft near Benehan ends with Dove's arrest on murder charges. The quarrel began over a trivial matter in a small eight by ten shanty after which Dove paid for Roycroft to drink. Roycroft struck Dove with a beer bottle, Dove called a doctor, and Roycroft died from a severed jugular vein. A witness says Roycroft cried murder. Suspicion falls on William Lewis, left handed, who may have stabbed Roycroft. The near beer parlor had been licensed only a week and the case stirs Granville because both men were prominent.
