A fire on the 17th floor of the Majestic Grill Room in Chicago forced hundreds of guests to flee as flames were contained with about 40 000 dollars in losses mostly from water. Firemen and elevator workers assisted guests while one resident beneath the grill refused to evacuate.
Rear Admiral David B. Macomb has died at his New York home in his 14th year of age related infirmities. Born in Florida, his mother Mary Worthington was Ohio governor’s daughter. The family moved to Texas where he joined the Mexican War era forces. His father was the republic of Texas’ first adjutant general and was assassinated by a Mexican fanatic. Macomb joined the navy in 1849 and by 1851 led the ship carrying the Rheingold expedition to Alaska and Siberia.
Washington D C Jan 28 Carrying a total of 125 421 538 the naval appropriation bill was reported to the house today by Chairman Ross of the naval affairs committee. The bill carries 5 929 316 less than the current appropriation and 2 044 21 less than the estimates submitted by the navy department.
Atlanta on January 28 report that Mrs. Frank Moore, recently arrived from Canada, tried to kill herself twice after declaring her husband did not love her. Her husband thwarted the asphyxiation and poison attempts and called police. Moore blamed jealousy for her actions.
Albany on January 28 reports that no quorum will be present in today’s joint session to vote on the United States senator. A small number of lawmakers remain in the city while many political leaders have left until Monday. Charles F. Murphy and Patrick McCabe were seen in conference before Murphy departed for New York.
