Terrific blast at a North Apple Street store causes at least three deaths and many injured. Clerks missing or severely burned. fire and rescue teams battle flames amid collapsed walls. A gas explosion and subsequent fire trigger widespread damage and investigations.
In Nashville on January 12 the joint session of the Tennessee general assembly tallies the second ballot for United States senator. McMillin gains 60 votes, Fitzhugh 20, Sanders 32, Frazier 19, and Brooks 1. A 67 vote majority is required. no candidate meets it and no election is achieved.
Washington reports a likely 45 day suspension of proposed freight advices in official classification and Western trunk line territories from February 1 to March 17 with a formal announcement possible today. Cheyenne notes Senator Clark chosen in Republican caucus to seek re election to the US Senate by a 44 to 39 vote.

Washington DC January 12 exports of wheat corn flour meat dairy products food animals and mineral oils for 1910 fell short of 1909 figures while cotton export value rose though volume declined. Wheat 22.9 million dollars down from 49 million. corn about 24 million vs 24.25 million. flour 43 million vs 50 million. meat and dairy 18 million vs 151 million. cattle hogs and sheep 9 million vs 16 million. mineral oils 88.5 million vs 99.75 million. Cotton value 530 million dollars up from 461 million. volume not as large as 1909.
Firefighters resumed efforts to locate three of five men missing after the chamber of commerce building fire in Cincinnati Ohio. Debris cooled enough to probe as investigators confirm the missing list with George Hayman of the Cincinnati Enquirer unaccounted for since entering the burning structure.
News from Bluefields reports a general shakeup of the Bluefields customs department after the removal of Governor M. Fernandez over a large smuggling scheme. Investigations found trunks listed as personal baggage carried dress goods shoes and other dutiable items at high rates, with multiple New Orleans firms implicated in collusion with local officials.

President Taft expected to give the principal address at a banquet, as Reps Longworth and Senator Lodge push bills to form the commission. Montgomery daily report states Weil Bros of Montgomery bought nearly 400,300 dollars of cotton from Charles Schuessler and Son of Lafayette Alabama in the year ending yesterday. The sale encompassed 5,127 bales at 14 3 4 cents per pound marking the largest spot cotton transaction in Alabama history.
