Ex president Theodore Roosevelt testified before a congressional committee about his approval of the United States Steel Corporation absorption of the Tennessee Coal & Iron Company. He said he acted on his own initiative and would do the same again, insisting his aim was to stop a panic and denying motives were questioned by Wall Street advisers. Charleston, S. C., Aug. 5. Charles Johnson and Harry Tracy, both negroes, were formally charged with vagrancy and carrying concealed weapons and held on suspicion of post office thefts. Arrested in the suburbs by rural policemen, they possessed about fifteen dollars in stamps and five boxes of cigars offered cheaply, plus Savannah pawn tickets. Post office inspectors have been notified.
Cape Haitien Aug. 5 French steamer refused indemnity offer to carry Firmin to Port au Prince. Troops from the south outside the capital cry Vive Le Firmin. German houses in Port au Prince cable Leconte offering money. Leconte expected to enter the capital tomorrow. Dr Rosalvo Bobo, a new presidential candidate, is aboard the steamer with many exiles.
President Taft will visit midwest and northwest farm districts including Wisconsin Iowa Minnesota and the Dakotas to discuss the reciprocity pact and farm issues. He may extend travels to Oregon Idaho and Montana and will meet agriculturalists personally. He also attends the Appalachian exposition in Knoxville and the G A R reunion in Rochester New York.
