Merchants across Kanawha and surrounding counties prepare for Charleston Days a large semi annual sale featuring more than 750000 dollars in merchandise. The 66 participating stores display Charleston Days placards and prize drawings offer up to 750 dollars. Entry blanks are in participating shops with drawings at sale end.
President Eisenhower said to be deeply disappointed there has been no voluntary progress toward school integration in Little Rock Arkansas this week. Governor Faubus moved to disqualify U S District Judge Ronald Davies and refused to honor a federal subpoena as the case involves National Guard use outside Central High School. The White House noted the case is before the courts and discussed a possible meeting with Negro leaders while avoiding interference in court proceedings.
A federal suit filed in Washington by New York City Teamsters members charges that more than 80 percent of convention delegates to be seated Sept 30 at Miami Beach were handpicked by James R Hoffa and other officials to ensure his victory. The action seeks an injunction to delay the election of new officers until new delegates are chosen by rank and file members. The case is handled by the Washington firm Dodd Kaplan Schmidt with Godfrey Schmidt leading the litigation. Schmidt previously represented Martin T Lacey in a challenge to votes of phony locals. Lacey won the election after those votes were discarded. O Rourke, Hoffa ally, later took the post after Lacey resigned. O Rourke has invoked the Fifth Amendment in Senate testimony.
In Richwood West Virginia a mountain lion exhibited at the fire station was an elaborate hoax to raise money for the Richwood Volunteer Fire Department. About 1000 people paid 25 cents each, earning nearly 300 dollars. The lion, five to six feet long and 85 pounds, was claimed trapped on Kennison Mountain but officials say it came from Wyoming and no law was broken.
