Recovery teams entered the sealed 74 mile mine after methane was drained from the eastern section. They will lower into Atha's Run shaft and progress westward, sealing sections as they go. Work may take six weeks to six months, with ponies used for transport until power returns.
Washington senator Frank Moss reported that major magazines and newspapers offered free antismoking advertisements. Publications including Readers Digest New Yorker Saturday Review Good Housekeeping The Boston Globe and others said they would publish warnings or limit acceptance rather than reject cigarette ads.
Michigan Senator Griffin, who led the effort to block Abe Fortas, announced reluctant support for federal Judge Clement Haynsworth. He expects Senate confirmation, with hearings to begin in Washington, and notes Haynsworth is not a hard core segregationist despite disagreements on civil rights.
A Union Carbide Corp tank car leaking flammable propylene gas blocked Indiana Avenue and Glen Street Sunday night. Charleston firemen controlled the scene with no danger reported. It followed another Carbide tank car leak in the valley within four days.
State's registrar J Douglas Anderson will visit Fayette and Mount Hope high schools Wednesday and Collins and Gauley Bridge high schools Thursday to talk with students about attending college. State's director of recruiting Harry Muilenburg will visit Ansted High School Tuesday and William Stevens visiting Montgomery High School Friday.

Names include Arthur Foye 33 James McClane 61 Pebbie Ashbury 25 Theodore Evans 61 Jean Johnson 29 Donna Breeden 25 Deborah Lowe and Pearl Bolton 22 for charges including illegal possession and sale of tax paid whisky and soliciting for prostitution at multiple addresses.
H G Noland manager of transportation operations at Union Carbide's South Charleston plant was elected vice president for Region 2 of American Waterways Operators Inc. The vote occurred at a special Region 2 meeting in Jacksonville Florida. He will serve the remainder of an unexpired term ending January 1970.
A Seattle retiree Herman Joslyn, 64, received a heart Sunday at Stanford University Hospital in California. He is in satisfactory condition after surgery led by Dr. Norman Shumway. Donor identity is not disclosed. Kidney transplants from the same donor went to Robert Green, 22, San Jose, and James Santos, 49, Mountain View, both in satisfactory condition. The operation marked the 144th heart transplant performed by Shumway's team.
Chapel Hill NC Negro mayor Howard Lee says he apologized to Gov Bob Scott for calling Scott a southern bigot after Scott blocked his $11000 a year lectureship. The UNC institute funded by NIH faces cuts with a monkey cancer virus program amid funding shortages and recent large-scale monkey sacrifices.
Timothy Russell Thoms, 17, of Pickens was killed early Sunday when the car he rode in went out of control on West Virginia 45 two miles north of Helvetia. Passenger Kenneth Spangler, 19, also of Pickens, was driving the single vehicle, which slammed into a garage after the curve.
In Washington Saturday night Lee disputed a statement attributed to him calling it a misquote and out of context while UNC faculty appointment proceedings were paused pending administrator discussion.
