Washington reports the first pensions under the welfare system for coal miners will start in the coming days with anthracite miners receiving 100 dollars monthly beginning Sept 15 and similar payments possible for bituminous miners. Eligibility requires 62 years old and 20 years in mines. The funds, funded by 20 cents per ton of coal, were won by the United Mine Workers after lengthy strikes.
