Greek forces report routing a fascist regiment of death after a fierce 40 hour fight on the Albania Adriatic front. Italian troops abandoned arms and stores as Greek advances widen toward Argyracastro and coastal sectors.
A 48 year old dockyards worker Owen Jenkins urged mediation at a five hour Amalgamated Engineering union meeting in London. A motion to submit the dispute to national arbitration was carried 25 to 11, halting a planned Dec 14 half day strike and allowing the arms program to proceed. The union, crucial to Britain’s war production, had debated a broader strike threat if demands for higher pay were not met.
In New Kensington Pennsylvania CIO workers at the Aluminum Company of America plant voted tonight to end a week long strike that halted work on several major national defense orders and left 7,500 employees temporarily idle.
The Associated Press reports persistent ice on mountain roads causing at least two deaths in the state. Eastern counties saw heavy snow with Tucker County worst at six inches while Elkins logged nearly three inches. Temperatures ranged from 24 at Elkins to 33 at Charleston. no additional snow fell yesterday afternoon.
Rear Admiral W R Furlong announced that machining of naval guns will begin early in December at the South Charleston naval ordnance plant. The gulf plant will employ about 200 men, mainly machinists, once reconditioning of the 23 year old factory is finished. Captain Roy Pfaff said A V Weiland will supervise reconditioning of the north unit for gun forgings.
Budapest dispatches report Iron Guard rebellion in at least six cities with armed bands in Bucharest ready to strike against Ion Antonescu regime. Descriptions speak of bloody clashes as government forces and rebels battle in multiple centers amid alleged executions and territorial seizures.
Berlin dispatches claim Liverpool is burning after a major German bombing raid with tires visible for miles at grain elevators drydocks warehouses and along the Mersey River. Other items note Nickel company expansion in Huntington, Japanese pressure on China for recognition, 17 Huntington volunteers for military service, and U S studies on factory output priorities for British defense.
In New Orleans on November 28 the American Federation of Labor unanimously reelected President William Green and Secretary-Treasurer George Meany. Fourteen of fifteen AFL vice presidents were also reelected as Seattle won the next year's meeting site after a short debate. Green flagged his aim to use every effort to bring peace to the labor movement.
About 300 demonstrators gathered outside the U S embassy in Mexico City and stoned the building as motorcycle police used tear gas bombs to break up the crowd. They shouted Viva Almanza Down with Wallace as President-elect Henry A Wallace arrived for the inauguration.
German bombers pounded the northwestern Liverpool area and Merseyside for several hours. Authorities reported few deaths and noted heavy anti-aircraft fire limited damage mainly to houses. The raid followed a day of fighting and involved heavy bombers targeting multiple English regions.
Jesse L. Livermore, famed stock speculator known as a boy plunger who grew an initial five dollars into millions, shot himself in the Sher ry-Netherland hotel cloakroom after hours of drinking. A black book memo says he was tired of fighting and unable to carry on. He entered the hotel bar at noon and later returned to write as drinks flowed.
Rome reports heavy British and Italian forces clashed at sea near Sardinia. Italian communique says two British cruisers and an aircraft carrier were damaged, with Italian losses including destroyer Lanciere and cruiser Fiume. Seven British planes claimed down, two Italians lost.
British and Italian accounts conflict over Wednesday battle near Sardinia. The admiralty says a Littorio battleship and a Bolzano cruiser were hit, a Condottieri cruiser damaged, two Italian destroyers listing, and Berwick sustaining two hits with casualties amid a downed British plane. Italian report claimed heavier British losses and aircraft carrier damage.
