In Atlantic City on November 18 AP reports John L. Lewis announced his stepping down as CIO president while urging unified leadership. Philip Murray is expected to be elected his successor as Lewis remains UMW president and promises future advocacy for the unprivileged amid economic distress.
In Chicago and New York raids by agents of the Dies committee seized a man tied to the Nazi secret service. Subpoenas were issued and records including files and ledgers were collected for investigation. Translators were assigned as authorities studied the material. the detainee identified as Heinrich Peter Fassbender alias Harry Smith of Dusseldorf.
Willie Willis boasts about a bet tied to a class year featuring two farm kids from the countryside. He claims he could not kick either, hinting at a local schoolyard dare or boast.
In New Orleans the AFL convention heard that President Roosevelt desires labor peace as the defense program advances. William Green signaled willingness to cooperate and urged freeing AFL and CIO committees to work with White House assurances of good will. Secretary Stimson warned production remains inadequate and sacrifices from labor and the public will be needed for rearmament. British reports say heavy bombardment hit an Italian port in Africa and an Italian base in Albania near Tirana. RAF bombers struck Eusani and other sites while naval units damaged Dante in Somaliland and coastal defenses. Washington reports all British authorities agree on sites to be leased for a U S defense zone stretching from Newfoundland to British Guiana. The plan calls for joint use of facilities and outlines Bermuda expansions including a land plane base and seaplane bases with depths for patrol craft and explosive stores.
Firefighters battled a roof blaze at the municipal auditorium last night after a kettle ignited and spread smoke across the roof. Assistant Chief Frank Clsinch said damage was limited to the roof with the vast majority of the building saved. Spectators reported the roof fire started on the roof and firemen were dispatched from the city’s fire department.

Greek high command reports renewed ferocity in a three week war. Greek forces repulsed counterattacks and advanced along the Epirus front and near Koritza.
