October Fire Loss Fixed at 165260 in West Virginia
Fires caused a loss of 165260 in West Virginia during October doubling October 1938, Fire Marshal Fred B Watkins reported. Twenty four suspicious fires were investigated including four in Kanawha three in Raleigh and one each in Cabell Fayette Mason Mercer McDowell Pocahontas Summers and Wyoming counties. One person was convicted of arson in Cabell county. Eight deaths occurred from fires and explosions. three in Wyoming county. Forty five fires were reported 23 in dwellings and 21 totally destructive. Insurance on damaged property was 626160 with a sound value of 915842.

Eighty Thousand Dollar Addition Planned for Store
An adjoining four story unit to the Montgomery Ward building at 712 East Washington street will be built after January 1 at about $80,000. W B Geary of Geary Securities says bids will be requested around December 20. Montgomery Ward’s Chicago architects will design the addition, with South Penn Oil occupying part of the site and 85 feet left for its filling station and parking. The new unit will measure 40 feet by 130 feet and parallel floor levels will link entrances with the old building and its basement.
