In Tavares Florida on November 14 a circuit court jury acquitted J C Pike of the murder of station proprietor Angle. The trial then focused on Levi N Allen and Mrs Gillin with a younger man named Prescott testifying about Pike’s alleged confession and presence at the scenes. Prescott faces separate charges and will be tried later.
CANON CITY CALO NOV 16 Five men were placed in solitary confinement after a tunnel was discovered on the grounds of the state prison. Investigators say the tunnel could have provided an escape route amid a prior mutiny in October that left 18 prisoners dead and 700 workers involved in reconstruction. Authorities report discovery of weapons and concealed tools as the search continues with guards patrolling the prison.
Sheriff Budnay C Dederick was exonerated by a coroner jury in the killing of Mrs Louise Horton 45 of Kanana City a whiskey jumper. The driver Mack Howard Harris 41 Kansas City testified Horton was intoxicated and drew a revolver prompting the sheriff to shoot. Harris denied ownership of liquor found in the car. Horton’s husband Frank Horton is in prison for a liquor law violation and Horton had been living in Kansas City with Mrs Horton.
The Veterans Bureau plans to pay about 66800 in premium dividends next year to 5600 West Virginia policyholders. Nationwide 450000 holders, with policies from one to ten thousand dollars, will share the surplus above reserves to cover mortality losses.
The body of Jens H. Drachman, son of Holger Drachman the Danish author, was found in a Los Angeles hotel room with wrists slit. Identified by friends after nearly 42 hours, Drachman had lived in the U S and Denmark and worked as an interior decorator. He is survived by his widow and a son.
Charleston High defeated Huntington High 8 to 0 before about 6 000 fans at Laidley Field. Ray Collins scored the only points, with Charleston's defense holding Huntington to no first downs and dominating both lines in a hard fought City rivalry game.
